GPE at the forefront of SDG Action event on Education

Video of the week

This week, GPE CEO Alice Albright participated in a day-long event on SDG 4 organized by the President of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The event highlighted the crucial role that the education SDG will play in reaching the other 16 development goals by 2030.

Alice Albright moderated a panel titled “What will it take to achieve SDG 4” and in her remarks to the press after the event, she noted that the global community must rally to fight the financing crisis that education is facing.

The education share in total aid has fallen for six years in a row, from 10% in 2009 to 6.9% in 2015. If the trend continues, there will be no chance to reach the millions of children and youth who are out of school or who don’t receive a good enough education to thrive later in life.

Alice Albright also noted that the long-term efforts of strengthening education systems, with the governments of developing countries in the driver’s seat, is the only solution to meaningful and sustainable reforms in education. This is what GPE stands for, and that’s why the GPE replenishment campaign now underway aims to raise US$3.1 billion from current and new donors, with the aim to make GPE a US$2 billion a year organization by 2020.
