Aid to education

In addition to foreign policy, diplomacy and trade, Global Affairs Canada (GAC) administers foreign aid programs in developing countries.

Global Affairs Canada has five priority themes for international assistance:

  • Increasing food security
  • Securing the future of children and youth (strong interest in child/maternal health, access to quality education)
  • Stimulating sustainable economic growth (also includes programming for education)
  • Advancing democracy
  • Promoting stability and security

In 2015, top recipients of Canadian aid to basic education were: Afghanistan Senegal, Bangladesh, Mali and Mozambique.

Canada and GPE

Canada is the alternate board member of the Donor 3 constituency on the GPE Board. The United Kingdom is also a member of this constituency. Canada sits on the Finance and Risk Committee.
